FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hurston Institute for Learning & Development (HILD) Awarded Nonprofit Infrastructure Grant

Minneapolis, Minn., December 21, 2021 – HILD was awarded $45,000 by Propel Nonprofits through the Nonprofit Infrastructure Grant Program to be used for infrastructure and capacity building support.

“After two rounds of NIGP funding – 32 grants totaling $1.5 million – we can see the state’s investment is working to build a pipeline of nonprofits serving cultural communities who can apply for state grants and contracts.” said Kate Barr, President and CEO for Propel Nonprofits.

HILD’s three priority areas for organizational infrastructure development are:

1. Build staff capacity. HILD plans to expand its cadre of staff experts to enable us to develop    internal systems and processes, to expand external partnerships, and to effectively implement programming.

2. Build resource development expertise. HILD plans to expand its work with an external resource development consultant to create and implement a plan to grow income through earned income and donated revenue from individuals and institutions. This work will help HILD achieve stability and sustainability over the long term.

3. Build executive leadership skills. HILD plans to have the Executive Director engage in targeted leadership development and coaching to more effectively engage the board of directors; mentor and guide staff; and provide oversight for friendraising/fundraising, partnerships and collaboration; and financial and programmatic accountability.

“These investments will support small nonprofits that play an essential role in building strong and vibrant communities; these nonprofits connect ethnic minority populations, who are often isolated and marginalized, to culturally and linguistically needed services. They prepare people for the workforce. Like other nonprofits, their services provide a social safety net and drive employment, community, and economic development,” said Naima Farah, Capacity Building Program Manager for Propel Nonprofits.

These infrastructure grants will be used for everything from implementing new financial and data management systems to building staff and board capacity. As in the first two rounds of Nonprofit Infrastructure Grant Program (2017-2019 and 2020 -2021, respectively), there was once again strong demand from this kind of infrastructure support from nonprofits across Minnesota.

In addition to grant funding, awarded organizations will also receive ongoing technical assistance from Propel Nonprofits regarding financial administration.

The funding for this program came from a state appropriation through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and was secured in partnership with Coalition of Asian American Leaders.
